In addition to everything else I’ve had going on this summer—internship work, writing, and wrapping up my last undergrad classes—I’ve been back at the gym a lot, thinking seriously about the future of this Substack as I bike mile after mile.
I’ve known for a while that if I wanted to keep this space going sustainably, I’d need to make a few changes. I love sharing historical knowledge and reflections here, and I’ve always struggled with the idea of putting that behind a paywall. But the truth is, I can’t keep pouring the kind of time and research I did this past winter into this platform without some support. (“In this economy?!”)
So here’s what I’ve decided:
Every Friday, I’ll be posting a free weekly update—History Notes—where I’ll share what I’ve been learning, thinking about, and uncovering in both class and in the field. These will also include some prompts or questions for conversation in the comments.
On or around the first of each month, I’ll also share a public preview of what’s coming—what I’ll be researching, writing, and reflecting on.
Everything else—my deeper dives, narrative essays, and original research—will be available to paid subscribers. It’s a shift, but one I hope will allow me to keep building this space in a sustainable way, while still keeping our community rooted in curiosity and care.
If you’ve enjoyed my writing here in the past and want to help support more of it, consider becoming a paid subscriber. That support makes it possible for me to keep doing meaningful, thoughtful work—while still making space for free content that stays open and accessible.
And if subscribing isn’t an option for you right now, that’s okay. Sharing posts, joining the conversation, or just reading along quietly all matter too.
Thanks for being here. I’m really proud of this new direction and can’t wait to share more with you.
Until next time,
Olivia
